FOUR LEAF CLOVER: 1 leaf for fame, 1 for wealth, 1 for a faithful lover, 1 to bring you glorious health, and all in 4 leaf clover.

One Response to “Magpies and Clover”

  1. About 10 years ago before reading George Monbiot’s book, Heat, and, hence, feeling that I could never go by plane anywhere again, I stayed in China. One day I was walking with a lovely Chinese lady when we came upon a magpie. “One for sorrow”, I declared! “We ought to try and see another”, I added. She agreed, but not for the superstitious reason of avoiding the now fated sorrow. We walked on and saw another and then another. Soon there where about 10 magpies and she was delighted. She laughed at me, explaining that in China the theory is as follows:

See ONE magpie = mild good fortune
See TWO magpies = more good fortune
See THREE magpies = even more good luck
    ….and so on…
See an INFINITE NUMBER of magpies = be infinitely lucky!
    What a wonderfully optimistic outlook!!
